Wash Day Choreography: The 7-Step Routine for Fine Natural Hair

Wash day shouldn't take 6 hours. Here's Val's exact 7-step sequence — designed for fine strands, with timing and tools for each step.

Most wash day routines online were written for thick hair. They tell you to pile on cream, sit under a steamer for an hour, and finger-coil every strand. Fine hair can't survive that — and your Sunday can't either.

The 7 steps, in order

  • 1. PRE-POO (20 min) — Section into 4. Apply slip oil (jojoba/grapeseed) root-to-tip. Cover with a plastic cap.
  • 2. DETANGLE WHILE OILED (10 min) — Fingers first. Wide-tooth comb second. Re-twist each section as you finish.
  • 3. CLEANSE (5 min) — Sulfate-free shampoo at the scalp ONLY. Let suds run down strands. Do NOT scrub lengths.
  • 4. RINSE-OUT CONDITIONER (3 min) — Slip-rich conditioner, scalp to ends. Light comb-through. Rinse cool.
  • 5. DEEP CONDITION (20-30 min) — Moisture-protein balanced mask. Plastic cap + 10 min low heat (or body heat).
  • 6. LCO LEAVE-IN (10 min) — Liquid leave-in, then Cream, then light Oil. Per section. Smooth, don't rake.
  • 7. STYLE OR STRETCH (varies) — Banding, two-strand twists, or a low bun with no tension at the edges.

Total time

Under 2 hours, including styling. If it's taking you 5+, you're either using too much product, detangling dry, or skipping the pre-poo. Fix those three things and your wash day shrinks.

What to skip (controversial but true for fine hair)

  • Skip clarifying shampoo every wash. Once a month, max.
  • Skip rice water rinses every week. Every other week, 5 minutes — protein overload is real.
  • Skip the Denman brush. The clumping it gives coarse hair, it takes from fine hair.
Fine hair rewards precision. Stop following thick-hair routines and watch your Sunday open back up.
