What counts as fine natural hair?+
Fine refers to strand diameter — not density. A single fine strand is thinner than a sewing thread. You can have a full head of fine 4C coils that still feels lightweight and reveals scalp at the parting.
Why does fine hair break so easily?+
Smaller strand diameter = less cortex to absorb tension. Friction, tight styles, heavy butters, and over-manipulation cost fine hair more length than they cost medium or coarse hair.
Low or high porosity — how do I tell?+
Low-porosity strands resist water and product (beads sit on top, conditioner pills). High-porosity strands drink water fast but lose it fast. My Crown AI reads porosity from your photo; your routine should match it.
Protein vs. moisture — which do I need?+
Mushy, limp, over-stretchy strands → protein. Dry, rough, snapping strands → moisture. Most fine hair needs layered moisture weekly and light protein every 3–4 weeks.
Are heavy butters bad for fine hair?+
Shea, mango, and cocoa butters weigh fine strands down, flatten curl clumps, and trap dust. Favor water-based leave-ins and light oils — jojoba, argan, grapeseed, baobab.
How do I protect my edges?+
No daily tension. No tight braids or ponytails on the perimeter. Sleep on satin or silk. Wash gently in sections. Edges are the first to break and the last to grow back.
